GOTW – Natalie Portman

26 May

Natalie (Hershlag) Portman
Age: 30
Hometown: Jerusalem, Israel
Known For: Padme Amidala in Star Wars Prequels
Evey Hammond in V for Vendetta
Samantha in Garden State
Nina Sayers in Black Swan
Jane Foster in Thor

The ever adorable sweetheart Natalie Portman has had a fantastic film career so far and has done much more to deserve a spot in our Geek Of The Week archives.

Believe it or not until I started writing this article (an most of you who read it) did not know that Natalie Portman was born in Jerusalem by the name Natalie Hershlag, that has such a ring to it. A brainy chick that she is, she holds bachelor’s degree in Psychology from friggin Harvard University. In fact she cares so much about education that when she was in high school, she skipped the premiere of Star Wars Episode I so she could study for her final exams (talk about dedication). She’s even taken graduate classes at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and guest lectured at Columbia University. She’s co-authored papers published in several scientific journals.

natalie-portman(She knows more about frontal lobe activation during object permanence than you.)

She really fell into the hearts of geeks everywhere when she was cast as Queen Amidala in the Star Wars prequels. An onscreen team up of her and Kiera Knightley in Episode 1 caused nergasms worldwide.

keira and natalie(I believe they’re part of a cloning project to make the perfect actress)

Natalie earned our love during all three Star Wars prequel upstaged only by the incredible character skills of Jar-Jar Binks. She maintains an excellent balance between both dramas and sci-fi flicks, playing incredible roles in movies such as the tempting Alice in Closer, the lovable Sam in Garden State, Evey in V for Vendetta, and most recently Jane Foster in Thor, in which she passed our expectation as a worthy portrayal of Thor’s love interest. And who could forget her role in Black Swan where she made most movie goers ‘quite excited’ during her totally awesome scene alongside Mila Kunis.

(I LikeButton this)

She continues to be involved in the production of Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, she has leant her voice to The Simpsons (a true attribute to success), and has shown her comedic side on SNL,, and a few films.

Aside from acting, Natalie is great humanitarian. Proving so with her involvement as an advocate for animal rights, acting against poverty by traveling to third world countries to help, as well as being an active voice in politics. Making her an all around fantastic and wonderful human being.

With an abundance of award winning roles, an ivy league degree,  better hobbies than anyone I know, and more talent than us, Natalie is one of our favorite geek girls and worthy of being our Geek of The Week. We thank Natalie for all she does and all she continues to do and to please tell George Lucas we don’t need any more movies to kill the franchise.

As always here are some closing images for your viewing pleasure and since we love Natalie so much we will be as tasteful as possible.

(beautiful and smart, a deadly combination)

GOTW – Claudio Sanchez

26 May

mtv pic
Claudio Paul Sanchez

Age: 32
Hometown: Suffern, NY
Known for: Coheed and Cambria (band)
The Prize Fighter Inferno (band)
Armory Wars (comic)
Kill Audio (comic)

Claudio earns his right as Geek of The Week because he was a geek even before he became famous. He has written every Coheed and Cambria album based on the comic book Amory Wars, he created. Hell he even named the band after the two main characters.
amory wars cover     Totally immersing yourself and all your work into a fictional universe you created in your head, and had thedrive to transfer it into several mediums (a comic series, several concept albums, and a novel) is impressive in itself.  The fact that he has tried to bring it to life and has managed to introduce millions of fans into the story is a megageek’s dream. I mean what true geek doesn’t have an original epic story or some kickass fan fic they’ve written?
I’ll admit I got introduced to Coheed and Cambria after they had been around for a little while. They had just released Good Apollo, their fourth album. A friend let me borrow all the CDs and comics and from then on I was hooked. Having comics to graphically portray the albums was incredible. The whole story and concept was brilliant.action figure
Aside from The Amory Wars, Claudio is also the creator of Kill Audio. Probably one of his lesser known works. He did get a sweet action figure of himself and as you can tell bares the extreme hairdo pulled off by few
Claudio has broken into many of the genres of geek. Comics, music, action figures, books, and even video games; along with the rest of Coheed you can hear their song Welcome Home in Rock Band and Madden 2006. Claudio had managed exist in the elements that make the geek world after having been a long time fan. I can only imagine how he must feel about that. The thought baffles my mind. If you’ve never heard of Claudio before or his band Coheed and Cambria, I suggest you get Googling. Claudio is a definitive geek. He’s into everything you and I are and absolutely someone cool I feel I could totally hang out with. After all, who doesn’t want to hang out with someone with such great hair and had far too much going on in their head its scary (remind me of myself). Plus there’s this….

Now if that doesn’t just scream “I’m totally chill.” I don’t know what does. So let’s face it Claudio; comics, video games, concept albums, awesome hair, mysterious blood smeared over your clothes……you’re a geek.

GOTW – Summer Glau

14 Mar

Summer Lyn Glau
Age: 30
Hometown: San Antonio, TX
Noteworthy Roles: River Tam in Firefly
Cameron Phillips in Terminator: Sarah Connor Chronicles
Tess Doerner in The 4400

Summer has been (willingly or not) typecast as a kickass sci-fi chick. Her role as River Tam in the totally awesome TV show Firefly (that was most unfortunately cancelled by some idiots) and the sequel/pseudo-conclusion movie; Serenity, should only be mentioned and any true geek will, for lack of a better term, totally geek out. I don’t know if it’s because she reminds me of the hot, crazy, alternative girl from high-school or what but she’s definitely got my heart.

Firefly - Serenity - RiverThe fact that she takes on such a plethora of sci-fi roles earns her a place in our Geek Of The Week vault. She is able to convince us she is a telekinetic prodigy, a paranoid schizophrenic, and even a motherflippin’ cyborg.

Her years of training as a ballet dancer are not only super hot but helped her to be able to easily learn how to play a character that can truly whip some ass.

josswhedan_narrowweb__200x298She may only just be starting her career, beginning only eight years ago, but we can be sure we’ll see more of her playing some memorable sci-fi hotties, based on her track record. I’m still a little disappointed she isn’t going to be in Suckerpunch; or am I the only one who feels as though she would have fit in there perfectly?

Summer definitely deserves this weeks title, I’d tell her myself how much she is praised in the geek world but I’m sure she already has a good idea. Besides if I got the chance it’d be more awkward than when Leonard, Raj, and Wolowitz met her on the train on Big Bang Theory.

As with all geek girls, we have to show evidence that they can give reason as to why we swoon over them and can look good despite what character they are playing:

Hott                                                  Also Hott

Some may say she can only play one type of role but I know two things: Summer Glau is a definite geek and you never mess with a girl with a gun ….

GOTW – Rosario Dawson

21 Nov

Rosario Dawson

Age: 31
Hometown: New York, NY
Notable Roles: Ruby in Kids
Gail in Sin City
Becky in Clerks 2
Roxana in Alexander

Rosario is every geeks favorite Puerto Rican Afro-Cuban actress. She has proved that no matter what role she is playing, whether it be the leader of rouge prostitutes in Sin City or the manager at a burger joint in Clerks 2, she can look good and fascinate us with how much she looks like one of our girl friends that you’ll only ever be friends with and there’s nothing you can do about that (except fantasize).
In addition to acting Rosario is also a singer. Only seen her movies and didn’t know that? well she was in the movie adaptation of Rent. She also was featured on a track on one of Outkast’s albums. Oh and in 1999 she teamed up with Prince to remix and rereleased his hit 1999, as in Prince aka the artist formerly known as Prince aka that funny symbol for a name guy aka Prince, as in one of the top artists of all time. Yeah that guy. So she managed to do pretty well despite many not knowing she is multi-talented.
Her geek cred  really comes mostly from movies, starring in indie and blockbuster hits. Men in Black II, Clerks 2, Grindhouse, Sin City, Eagle Eye just to name a few. Oh and there was her full nude scene in Alexander which failed in the US market.

(kinda wish you had went to see it now huh?)

I  also hear she is an absolute pleasure to work with on set. Which makes her even more worthy, the fact that a pretty girl can be so nice and be a geek. It’s almost unreal.
The occult crimes taskforcenumber one thing Rosario does that makes her an over-the-top extreme geek is the fact that she put out her own comic book. How many girls you know can say they did that? The story is about a group of NY police officers that patrol a part of the city inhabited by practitioners of magic and deal with crimes of occult origin. Occult Crimes Taskforce was a miniseries published by Image comics, you can still find back issues at some shops and online.

Not only did she create the story but she also managed to include a character that looks very familiar.

imnotobsessedcom(hmm can’t quite figure it out)

Rosario has not only become an accomplished actress and singer she also manages to designate a lot of her time to volunteer in support groups and charities and tons of other organizations. She done pretty well for a girl whose family was homeless when she was young and lived in an abandon building. Kind of makes your accomplishment of cracking the key for the new Adobe suite less triumphant.

I’ll leave you with more proof that geek girls exist and yes they can be hott…

GOTW – Wil Wheaton

23 Jul

Wil Wheaton

Age: 38
Hometown: Burbank, California
Known For: Wesley Crusher on Star Trek
Gordie LaChance in Stand by Me
Martin Brisby in The Secret of NIMH
Aqualad on Teen Titans
Wil Wheaton on The Big Bang Theory

It’s a wonder why we haven’t honored Wil Wheaton as Celebrity Geek of The Week sooner. He has been a geek since he was young starring as the memorable Wesley Crusher on Star Trek: The Next Generation, a show, in any of the versions, that even if you just had a guest appearance on you were forever imbedded in geek culture by association of one of the shows labeled as the epitome of geeky.

WilWheaton2(fan favorite?)

Post-Star Trek Wil has continued to grace the small screen gearing mostly towards the geek audience; doing voices for shows like Teen Titans, Ben 10, Naruto, and Batman The Brave and The Bold to name a few. He’s guest-starred in The Outer Limits, Eureka, and does a spot on impression of Wil Wheaton on The Big Bang Theory.

sheldon and wil(The Green Goblin to my Spider-Man, the Pope Paul V to my Galileo, the Internet Explorer to my Firefox!)

But besides appearing on sci-fi shows and voicing superhero cartoons, Wil keeps his hand in another aspect of the geekdom by lending his voice to video game greats like: Fallout:New Vegas, Everquest II, DC Universe Online, and four of the Grand Theft Auto video games in the series. He is also an avid Dungeons and Dragons player, adding to the proof of his geeky-ness.
To pile more on, he has appeared in an issue of the comic book PS 238, appearing as a telekinetic version of himself.

Wil has never been one to hide his geeky side. In fact he revels in it, running a blog. He acts in the online series The Guild, based around World of Warcraft. He’s even written a book….

41AwkwdbrdL._SS500_(the title says it all)

You’d be a hardpressed to find someone who didn’t appreciate Wil Wheaton as a geek (Sheldon Cooper aside of course). There has even been an unwritten rule created about playing games online, known as Wheaton’s Law; it simple states “Don’t be a dick.”
I could go on forever, talking about his countless involvements in the geek world; including what he’s done with/for Penny Arcade, w00tstock, and with nerdcore rapper MC Frontalot. But any true geek knows why Wil Wheaton is probably one of the most deserved of all of our Geek of The Weeks so far.
So congratulations Wil Wheaton you are, as you already know, the ultimate geek. Cartoons, sci-fi, comics, video games, conventions, he’s truly living the geek life….that bastard.

(and he’s totally not conceded at all)
